Our story actually began in Bulgaria, 1957, when the
adept luthier Hristo Tchechmedjiev first opened his
doors for business. By 1970 he founded Orpheus
Violin House, and had with him a 10-year-old
apprentice, his nephew Yuriy Hristev Tchechmedjiev.
By the early ‘80s, Hristo’s violins, violas and ‘cellos
had won medals and a Diploma from the International
Competition for Luthiers in Cremona, Italy. His
success catapulted him to the United States, where
he founded an Orpheus Violin House in Oakland, CA
and eventually in the Sacramento area.
Yuriy, the young apprentice, took over the Bulgarian
atelier. After a decade of plying his craft, Yuriy
capitalized on his own success as a builder and
ventured to the United States, once again joining his
uncle. The two were a prolific pair, performing many
historic restorations and each building fine
instruments of their own.
After falling in love with the stark beauty of the
American Southwest, Hristo set up an Orpheus
Violin House in Green Valley, Arizona, while Yuriy
maintained the business in Sacramento. Surveying the
growing needs Sacramento’s music community, Yuriy
sought to bring his services to the next level. With
characteristic verve, Sacramento Violins was founded
in 2010.
